Bangkok, Thailand – July 29, 2025
In a significant development that threatens regional stability, the Royal Thai Army today revealed that Cambodia has violated a mutually agreed-upon ceasefire, forcing Thailand to reiterate its right to self-defense under international law. This comes after both nations had committed to halting military engagement along their shared border, effective midnight on July 28, 2025, with the aim of fostering peace and cooperation.
Maj. Gen. Vitay Laithomya, spokesman of the Royal Thai Army Headquarters, confirmed that the Thai side rigorously adhered to the ceasefire agreement, ceasing all fire across all areas precisely at the stipulated deadline. This immediate compliance underscored Thailand's commitment to the commitments made by both governments.
However, in a deeply troubling turn of events, Cambodian forces continued to fire weapons into Thai territory in multiple locations after the ceasefire was established. This intentional act is a clear and egregious violation of the agreement, severely undermining the trust essential for good neighborly relations.
The Royal Thai Army unequivocally condemns Cambodia's behavior. Thailand, in response, is compelled to take countermeasures strictly under the internationally recognized right of self-defense. Maj. Gen. Vitay emphasized, "Thailand does not use force to invade, but to protect national sovereignty and the safety of its people."
He further stated, "When we stop, but he doesn’t stop…the world must know that Cambodia is a persistent violator of agreements, a party that does not respect international rules, does not adhere to any international agreements that have been announced on the world stage, and is a threat to regional and global security.”
Allowing such blatant disregard for agreements would set a dangerous precedent, normalizing injustice within the international system. Therefore, the Royal Thai Army urges the international community to unite in upholding the principles of truth, justice, and the rule of international law, to ultimately achieve the peace that the region desperately seeks.
